Kenya coffee marketer seeks sales rules clarity

(Reuters) - A Kenyan coffee marketing agent urged the government on Thursday to resolve conflicts of interest among marketing agents who also double up as exporters, saying it denied farmers getting better prices in the market.

Last year Kenya set rules to regulate the direct sales of coffee buyers abroad, allowing farmers to bypass a central auction where all Kenyan coffee had been traded since 1935.

Kenya says wins EU pledge of equal trade access

(Reuters) - Kenya has been promised the same level of access to European Union markets as received by its poorer neighbours Uganda and Tanzania once a new trade deal takes effect in 2008, Kenya's trade minister said on Tuesday.

The EU is negotiating new economic partnership agreements (EPAs) with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries to replace the Cotonou Agreement that guarantees preferential access for their goods into Europe until the end of 2007.

E.Africa firms see worse security, power supply

(Reuters) - Businesses in Kenya expect security to deteriorate, while their Tanzanian and Ugandan counterparts expect access to reliable and affordable energy to worsen in 2007, a survey released on Friday said.

Tanzania and Uganda suffered severe power cuts in late 2005 and most of 2006 after drought depleted their hydropower generation capacity.

Kenyan shilling steady vs dollar, banks dominate trade

(Reuters) - The Kenya shilling held steady against the dollar on Friday, in trade dominated by banks, dealers said.

At 1000 GMT, commercial banks quoted the local currency at 67.05/15 to the dollar, the same as Thursday's close.

Kenya court dismisses case against Kenya Re

(Reuters) - A Kenyan judge dismissed on Wednesday a suit seeking to prevent the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation (Kenya Re) from selling shares to the public, saying the case lacked merit.

The government plans to sell a 40 percent stake in Kenya Re for 2.28 billion shillings in an initial public offering (IPO) next month. The public has between July 18 and 31 to place its orders.
