Stocks Retreat in Europe; UBS, BNP, Philips, BHP, Lafarge Lead the Drop

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks fell, following
declines in Asia and the U.S., on mounting concern that losses in
the U.S. mortgage market will erode economic growth and raise
financing costs for companies.

UBS AG and BNP Paribas SA led a drop by financial shares.
Royal Philips Electronics NV and Lafarge SA decreased as the
dollar traded near a record low against the euro. BHP Billiton
Ltd. and Rio Tinto Group slipped after copper fell in Shanghai.

S.African stock market boosted by miners, banks

(Reuters) - South Africa's blue chip top-40 index rose over 1.7 percent on Monday, boosted by resource and banking stocks in late afternoon trade.

At 1452 GMT, the blue-chip index was 1.6 percent stronger, with heavyweight miners Anglo American up 2.07 percent to 402.40 rand and BHP Billiton 3.75 percent higher at 203.60 rand.

S.African stocks up as miners, financials recover

(Reuters) - South African stocks pushed more than 1 percent higher on Monday as miners and financials recovered from last week's bruising.

Heavily-weighted miner Anglo American, which slid more than 5 percent on Friday, gained 1.14 percent while peer BHP Billiton jumped 2.15 percent.

Australian Mining Stocks Rise, Led by BHP Billiton; Macquarie Declines

(Bloomberg) -- Australian shares rebounded from early
losses, led by BHP Billiton Ltd. after copper and oil prices rose.

Macquarie Bank Ltd., the nation's largest investment bank,
fell on speculation higher credit costs will slow global takeovers
and dent advisory fees.

S.Africa bourse slips on global economy, rates woes

(Reuters) - Mining groups Anglo American and BHP Billiton led South African shares lower on Wednesday over jitters of economic slowdown in the U.S. and China, but gold shares soared on the metal's price.

Traders said the bourse was spooked into profit taking as U.S. stocks fell after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed expects the U.S. economy to expand one-quarter percentage point below its estimate six months ago.

U.K. FTSE 100 Benchmark Declines, Paced by BHP; Rolls-Royce, Kelda Slip

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks fell for a second day,
paced by BHP Billiton Ltd. after Deutsche Bank AG downgraded the
shares and metal prices retreated. Anglo American Plc and
Antofagasta Plc also declined.

Rolls-Royce Group Plc, Kelda Group Plc and Schroders Plc
slid as brokerages lowered their recommendations for the
companies' stocks. Reed Elsevier Plc dropped after it agreed to
sell Harcourt Education for $4 billion.
